The Burkes are of Anglo-Norman descent and came to Ireland in the 12th century. The name is derived from the Olde English “burh”, which in turn comes from the Old German “burg”, a common word for a fortification. The name was first found in County Galway. The name Burke now ranks as the 14th most numerous in Ireland with a population of approximately 19,000 members.
