The O’Donnells are the descendants of a number of septs of Ó Domhnaill whose origin is from the Gaelic Domhnall which means “world mighty”. They are chiefly associated with Tirconnaill (Donegal), the habitat of the largest and best known O'Donnell sept. The name is the 44th most numerous name in Ireland and has over 13,000 members. They have produced many illustrious figures in Irish history, as soldiers, churchmen, authors and politicians.
